Physical properties of ABS, polycarbonate, polyamide etc

At OKW we manufacture most of our plastic electronics enclosures from ABS; it’s strong and resistant to chemicals.

The properties of ABS plastic make it ideal for so many different applications, especially indoor environments. But some applications demand tougher types of plastics. Or ones capable of coping with highly specialised requirements.

That’s why OKW offers such a wide range of plastics and customised solutions in addition to ABS:

  • Polycarbonate (PC) – great for outdoor applications. Tough, better UV resistance than ABS, highly resistant to all kinds of temperature, good resistance against chemicals
  • Polyamide (PA) – extremely robust, high temperature stability, good sliding properties, highly wear-resistant. However, humid environments can change its properties.
  • PMMA (Plexiglas) – good mechanical properties but more brittle than ABS. Light transmission (to 92%) makes PMMA the number one choice for infra-red applications.
  • Blends – including PC + ABS which can cope with high and sub-zero temperatures. Resistant to chemicals but UV may have a negative effect.
  • TPE – a softer material, good for bump protection and for creating comfortable handheld enclosures. Weather-resistant, good chemical properties.
