ENCLOSURES FOR MEDICAL/LABORATORY ELECTRONICS

AltText

Hospitals, surgeries and laboratories are some of the most demanding non-industrial environments that an electronics designer will ever encounter.

Creating electronics products for the healthcare market brings its own unique challenges. Hospitals may not be as tough on tech as factories or abattoirs but they can still inflict plenty of daily wear and tear.

And the medical and wellness sector is also particularly demanding when it comes to aesthetics and ergonomics. Enclosures don’t just have to perform well; they must look and feel great if they’re to convey the excellence of the electronics they house. Presentation is everything.

So eight months ago we decided it was time for a desktop revolution, time to shake up the status quo and give electronics manufacturers something far more advanced than they’d normally expect from a standard enclosure.

That big step forward was EVOTEC – a designer desktop enclosure that would exceed the demands of the medical sector and also raise the bar for measurement and control engineering, environmental technology and IT.

At launch EVOTEC came in one plan size (200 x 124 mm) but now it has a bigger brother (250 x 155 mm) and smaller brother (150 x 93 mm). Here’s why they offer everything you should be looking for in a high end desktop enclosure…

1. Advanced Ergonomics

Those soft contours aren’t just there for show. Besides giving the enclosure an ultra-modern appearance, they make it highly tactile. We took all the ergonomics experience gained from creating 18 ranges of handheld enclosures and channelled it into EVOTEC.

2. Inclined (Or Flat) Lids

Offering an inclined lid – 12° in the case of EVOTEC – is de rigueur for a desktop enclosure. It also enables you to wall mount them for applications such as access control, presenting the keypad at a convenient angle for users.

Adding a flat top option to the range opens up many more possibilities. It offers you much more capacity for your electronics – especially in the new 150 and 250 sizes. Flat or inclined…the choice is yours. Each version has a large operating area for switches, push buttons or touch displays. And some are available with a recess for a keypad or product label.

3. Fixings And Ingress Protection

Tamperproof fixings are essential for medical electronics so all EVOTEC enclosures are assembled using Torx drive stainless steel screws as standard. There are screw pillars in both the base and lid for installing PCBs.

Optional IP 65 protection ensures the enclosures are completely dust-tight and also offer a strong degree of protection against water ingress. IP 65 testing involves directing a jet of water against the enclosure from all angles for at least 15 minutes (12.5 litres/minute; pressure 30 kPa; distance 3 metres).

4. Materials – Specify UV Stable Plastic

Many plastic enclosures are moulded from ABS because it’s so tough and dependable but we decided to up the ante with EVOTEC: we specified ASA+PC-FR as standard. And not just because the blend includes extremely robust polycarbonate (PC), which is used in CDs and riot shields.

We selected ASA+PC-FR for its UV stability. Yes, most medical enclosures are destined to spend their lives indoors but that doesn’t mean they’re immune to the weakening effects of sunlight. Why should outdoor enclosures have a monopoly on UV protection?
